Drive-By Shooting

I attended the photo la opening gala last night and was inspired by the amazing works on display.  Seeing my image "The Gift" printed and hanging on the wall with all the other Emerging Focus finalists was very satisfying.  The quality of the work and the prints is exceptional and I look forward to the event tonight when the judges announce the three winning prints.

Tomorrow will be a very exciting day as I will present images from my series "Drive-By Shooting" at the Open Show event starting at 5:30pm.  This collection of images is both a diary of my experiences traveling the world as well as a record of daily life and one's relationship to others and their environment.  I believe each image tells a story that is both influenced by what is visible in the frame as well as the viewers' own personal experiences, emotions, and expectations of what one does and feels throughout their daily life.  The majority of the images were captured from a moving vehicle as we traveled between locations for a documentary I was filming.  There was little to no interaction with the subjects throughout the series yet at times they appear to stare directly down the lens of the camera as if posing for the shot.  This connection formed in a fleeting moment draws me into these images and allows my mind to construct the story that was unfolding at that moment.

Please stop by the Emerging Focus section of photo la this weekend so I can share with you my experiences during the making of this series.  And good luck to all 20 finalists in this year's contest!

Emerging Focus, Open Show, and photo l.a.

I am very honored to be selected as one of the 20 Finalists in the Emerging Focus 2013 photo competition.  My image "THE GIFT" will be printed and displayed at the photo la exhibition January 16-19, 2014 at LA Mart in downtown Los Angeles.

THE GIFT is a Finalist in the Emerging Focus 2013 competition.

THE GIFT is a Finalist in the Emerging Focus 2013 competition.

The three winners will be announced at a reception on Friday, January 17.  I will be giving a short presentation on Saturday, January 18 around 6pm at the Open Show / Emerging Focus event.  I'm looking forward to sharing the story of THE GIFT as well as other images from a series I call Drive-By Shooting.  Throughout my career as a cinematographer I have had the opportunity to travel to some unique places.  Documentary filmmaking has enhanced my observational skills allowing me to act spontaneously and instinctually with my camera.  My goal is to capture the people of these places in the moment to discover clues about the human condition, their connections to each other, and their relationship to the environment that surrounds them.

Hope to see you at photo l.a.!

Finishing out 2013

TREE TOP is Best In Show, VISIONS 2013

Last year came to a close with some exciting news regarding my photography.  I'm making a push in 2014 to get some of my work seen as well as build out both my cinematography and photography websites.  A lot of new content coming soon!

I was honored to not only have my work selected in the VISIONS 2013 Sacramento Fine Arts Center juried photography show, which featured some excellent work, but to receive awards for three images.  I also had entered some images in the International Ozone Zone Photo Salon 2013 and was pleased to be honored as a Finalist in three different categories.

The end of 2013 was extremely busy with video production work as well.  I began working with some new clients in the corporate video arena, operated camera on the Huffington Post Live Music series, DP'd and operated A camera on two new episodes of International Ghost Investigators: Hollywood Division which airs on Audience on DirectTV, and directed a new commerical spot for Living Spaces featuring the traditional craftsmanship of the Amish.

2013 truly was a great year and I am really looking forward to what I'll make of 2014!
